2/22/2012 10:47:47 AM by

Another busy day here at the GIC and it is BEAUTIFUL outside. I literally heard birds singing outside my window today when I woke up. How can a good day not follow? We've got a big pot of coffee just waiting for you! Come see us!

Starting the week off right...

2/20/2012 6:47:10 PM by

Incredibly busy day today! We had a steady flow of interns, clients, visitors, and volunteers filling up our chairs up front & flowing in and out of the office. Made a run to Goodwill with Brianna to drop off the TV and so cleared up some space in the front. Speaking of which, come check out our other TV which is available for movies/games!! Met with a new client tonight and was reminded that this is my dream job. So invigorating and such a privilege when I am let into another human's world. If today is any indication, we're going to have a good week. :) Hope to see you here!

My first post!!

2/8/2012 9:24:30 AM by

Hello!

I'm one of the newest interns, Briana. See the page with all the staff members to learn a little more about me. I started out as a volunteer and have been an intern for about a month. I have felt so welcomed and included here. The sense of community is palpable.

I'm here this morning with Debbie and Liz and we're looking forward to a busy day with clients. Come brave the cold and see us!

Also, Andrew Bird is on the radio. Love him. You'll love him, too.

Is that Natasha Bedingfield?

MORE snow?!

It's Tuesday and--surprise, surprise--snowing agan!  The roads are treacherous so everybody be careful!

Sensory Processing

2/1/2012 1:35:13 PM by

The lecture was really good. I have been told you can find it online (it was an alumnae talk by Lucy Miller). It was surprising though, because I had never realized anyone doubted Sensory Processing Disorder existed. A large part of the talk was the scientific proof she had found.

Finally I see you Crystal Clear

1/31/2012 4:40:42 PM by Brianna

10 points if you can guess what I am listening to at the moment ....

Things are going well at the Gender Identit Center. We've had a good flow of people today.

Lectures

The Previous Post

1/24/2012 1:38:49 PM by Brianna

Hey there, so you all know, I wrote the previous post, but for some reason, my name didn't show up!

Grey Snow

1/24/2012 1:33:31 PM by

Although it's grey, cold and snowing at random today, it is  nice and warm at the Gender Identity Center. Come on down and enjoy some hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, gluten free chocolate chip cookes and almost gluten free cookies (minus the oats) chocolate chip oatmeal cookies while they last!! We all hope to see you soon!

Icky

It's a chilly, icky, snowy day today.  Travel safe, everybody!

Places of Worship

1/23/2012 3:37:01 PM by Kathleen

Sequoia is updating the website as I type!  We've launched into a bit of a discussion about places of worship in Denver.  What and how do you prefer to practice?

Testing

Experimenting with posts because our names are missing from the latest.

Morris Dee

1/18/2012 9:40:42 AM by

I went to a talk last night by Morris Dee (along with most of my classmates). He shared an interesting story about some fishermen after relating the whole history of the US to the importance of law. He was definately speaking to the lawyers in the audience (his jargon made me very glad I took a legal topics class) and while he seems to know about legal social justice, he does not seem to know much about social work at all.  Of course, I have never heard any of his other talks, so I am not a real judge.

A catchy title

1/18/2012 7:40:01 AM by

I've been trying to come up with a catchy title for this, but nothing has come to mind! However, I want to express my excitement over the fact that the weather is supposed to be in the 50s (or mid teens Celsius) for the rest of the week!!! In addition to the weather, yesterday was a lovely day down at the Gender Identity Center. Busy! Hope to see some of you down there soon :)

Sunshine at last!

1/17/2012 10:31:30 AM by

It's about time we had a bright and sunny day!  We've been on a The Fray kick for a few days, and still going strong!  What would you listen to today?

More on Sound

We also have some new white noise generators. Currently it sounds like we're visiting the ocean.

Be still and know I am

1/10/2012 2:04:01 PM by Brianna

I know you may be thinking, "what?!?" but we've been listening to really wonderful music in the background at the Gender Identity Center courtesy of a lovely volunteer. In case you're still curious, come on down and you will get to listen to The Fray, among other wonderful artists! Besides music, things are going well here. We have cookies to share with you! I hope to see you soon!

Music!

1/9/2012 8:19:47 PM by Brianna

Today was a fantastic day that the Gender Identity Center. We got to listen to a lot of music today in order to brighten up the office! Lots of good conversations were had. Additionally, we had several drop-ins, which is always enjoyable.

Trip to China

12/20/2011 2:03:12 PM by Debbie

The GIC is hopping today. One of our visitors suggested typing Denver to China into google directions. Give it a try- and come give us your suggestion of how to survive the trip, considering the long ocean voyage.

A beautiful Saturday

Good afternoon! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the beautiful weather we are currently experiencing. It is a quite but lovely day here at the Gender Identity Center. Come on down and have some fun with us!

Leaflet

12/2/2011 12:08:34 PM by Debbie

Just wanted to make people aware that we have a handout now (Author unknown) which someone left on our desk. It's been pretty well recieved by our drop-ins. It is titled "Reasons to Cherish Being Transsexual". Come on in and give it a read.

Snow Day

Today the GIC has been hopping. We have a couple drop ins and three of our interns here. Very unusual for a Tuesday, but a lot of fun.

A blue grey Monday

11/28/2011 1:17:15 PM by Brianna

Today is a slow day at the Gender Identity Center. I assume that the holidays took it out of everyone! Stop in if you would like. I hope all is going well. :-D

It is all coming to and end

11/20/2011 5:34:49 PM by Brianna

I have come to realize that I have not written a blog for a while. Shame on me! Additionally, things are finally starting to come to and end. My first quarter at DU is coming to a close!!! I just have one more HUGE final due on the 22nd and then I am done, which means I will be around the Gender Identity Center more frequently! :) Yay!

I have been doing a lot of Final writing recently and have become reaquainted with my Women's and Gender Studies major. :-) I highly recommend the following articles and or books:

* Performative Acts and Gender Constitution - Judith Butler

* Bodies that Matter - Judith Butler

* Doing Gender - West and Zimmerman

* Doing Difference - West and Zimmerman

They are all a bit difficult to read, especially Butler, but very interesting. I love them all and think that many of you would enjoy them as well!

I must go back to my studies. Take care all, and enjoy.

Happy Reading.

Fritters

11/15/2011 2:33:51 PM by Debbie

No, not the food- the activities. Last week I was reading Getting It Done: Notes on Student Fritters by Stan Bernstein. It's a good article for you to read if you find yourself stuck in an open ended role, like being a student or looking for a job. Fritters are activities that "justify not working under the ever-present pressure to work". They are coping strategies that let you have a break from work without feeling guilty about it. And sometimes, that break lets you be more productive in the end by saving your sanity. No-one can work 24 hours a day, 7  days a week, and live to tell the tale.

Happy 11/11/11 Everyone

11/11/2011 8:38:16 AM by Debbie

It is a very nice day outside, and today I will be working a little more on the grant in between seeing clients. I hope you all have a great day. Enjoy 11/11/11: it only comes once in a lifetime (unless you manage to live over a hundred years). Next year, 12/12/12 will be the last one till we hit 2101.

Tech Savvy

11/10/2011 3:10:27 PM by Debbie

Today we have been working on learning new tips and tricks for our computers and doing some folder organizing. Soon, we should be able to print receipts like you get in a store, instead of our 7 by 11 copies made by the printer.

Accounts and Things ...

11/8/2011 3:51:11 PM by Brianna

Today has been a good day. We made a run to Arc to donate a lot of clothes, which was successful and easy! I am currently working on accounts which is much easier than it was last time! It has been quieter today but there has been a good flow of people here, always wonderful.

:)

Grant writing

11/8/2011 1:07:27 PM by Debbie

It is again pretty quiet down here at the GIC. I am working on writing a grant for the GIC.

El Dia de Los Muertos

11/1/2011 9:27:42 AM by Brianna

Today is the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday which celebrates life through remembering those who have passed before us. People get dressed up and make a lot of special, traditional Mexican food to commemorate the dead.

Today is also a cold day in Colorado. Here comes more snow!

Quite, Cold Tuesday

10/25/2011 3:05:56 PM by Brianna

Yesterday was a beautiful, hot, sunny day with the wonderful smell of fall in the air. The leaves on the ground were crisp and refreshing when walking over them. Today is definitely preparing for a cold day tomorrow. Snow is exciting, but will definitely be something to get used to!

The Gender Identity Center is a bit slow today, but we have been kept busy with phone calls. We are all working on individual projects, so it is nice to be able to just sit and breathe a bit!

Hanging Out

10/25/2011 2:20:50 PM by Debbie

It is unusually quiet here for a Tuesday, and so we are all just working on individual projects. Personally, I'm investigating the Colorado Common Grant Application.

AASW

10/18/2011 2:03:02 PM by Debbie

I spent last Saturday night attending "The therapeutic role that animals play  in the lives of children" over at the University of Denver. The event was sponsered by the Institute for the Human Animal Connection. One of the speakers, Dr. Aubrey Fine, was very entertaining. He knows a lot about animal assisted therapy (one of the major inventors of the field), and it was wonderful to get to hear him speak.

Sorting through life

10/18/2011 2:01:43 PM by Brianna

Today has been a long, but good day so far. We have been preparing for the Memorial Service tonight at 7:30 at the Jefferson Memorial Church in Golden. I hope to see you there. Take care.

Catching Up on Reading

9/17/2011 4:32:02 PM by Bethany

I feel very lucky to be a fast reader.  Today was unusually slow and I had the opportunity to cruise through Jamison Green's book, "Becoming A Visible Man."  It was accessible and informative- a nice balance of anecdotal and academic/ sociopolitical content.
