Yesterday was a great day down at the Gender Identity Center. We kept the door and window open for as long as we could, but eventually had to put the air condintioning on. However, that meant that upon walking into the Gender Identity Center (past 4:30 pm) you could smell the sweet scent of freshly baked double chocolate chip cookies, and gluten and dairy free chocolate chip cookies baked by myself and our wonderful volunteers that were in yesterday!
Additionally, I will be in today for a brief while today. Remeber we have HIV testing today!

Today is my last official day as an intern at GIC. Hard to believe I have only been here for six months!
So apparently I haven't posted a blog in a while ...
5/29/2012 8:57:42 AM by Brianna
... in other words, finals are taking over my life!!! And this beautiful weather sure doesn't help either. Things are going pretty well for me at the moment. I've been enjoying the gorgeous weather we've been having and I am making progress of my final assignments.
Additionally, I won't be down at the Gender Identity Center this week due to finals, but will be in again next week! I hope you all enjoy your week and I hope to see you next week! :-)
5/15/2012 9:23:43 AM by Kathleen
...are a very yummy snack. That's all I have to say about that.
Thinking about how much I will miss all of our volunteers and interns here when my time is up in a few weeks!
Friday TIP Folding Fun
5/11/2012 11:57:24 AM by Jason Rathsack
Today's weather sets the perfect stage for folding the new T.I.P. journal. Over 500 journals need to be folded twice, stuffed in an envelope, addressed, stamped, and sent. Intakes, T.I.P. journal, coffee, Mickey the therapy dog all make for a great inside day today. Happy friday!
I've been MIA
5/10/2012 9:19:25 PM by Brianna
Hey there. So apparently I have been MIA! At least I've been on facebook recently! Anyway, still in midterms/entering finals (yes, the joys of a quarter system). Things have been going quite well down at the Gender Identity Center. Nice and busy, and I've been trainging our new intern, Donia! Alright, have a good night! I'm going back to my paper! YAY!

All the windows and doors are open in the office today. It is comfortable spring afternoon at the GIC. I got a promotion at work today so that is neat. Today I am continuing my research on different graduate schools. I am acting very indecisive as of late.
5/9/2012 11:45:43 AM by Debbie
We've been practicing skyping with our new staff, so the general skype is all set up if anyone wants to call in.
Plans, plans, plans
5/3/2012 11:43:30 AM by Jason Rathsack
I have plans. Yes I do. So far for the volunteers I have planned a monthly get together so we can hash out ideas, issues, and future things as well as getting to know one another. It will also act as a place for potential volunteers to show up and meet other volunteers, to get to know what goes on, and who they may work with.
I also want to plan a volunteer BBQ sometime this summer. Exciting!
5/2/2012 8:59:53 AM by Debbie
Transaction's scheduled to be here from 12-2pm. Come on down and meet them.
I have creativity block!
5/1/2012 9:20:34 AM by Kathleen
I want to come up with a creative name for the mentor program, one that makes a nice acronym. Any ideas??
The dog days are over The dog days are done The horses are coming So you better run
4/30/2012 8:21:54 PM by Brianna
I couldn't help it! She mentions DOGS and it's an EXCELLENT song. Today was a lovely day down at the Gender Identity Center. I trained a new intern and we listed to Florence and the Machine on Pandora, with one of my all time favorite films on in the background, Stranger Than Fiction. :)
4/30/2012 4:38:43 PM by Kathleen
I just sent out a slew of emails to GLBT organizations at every Colorado university and college I could think of. Trying to recruit volunteers for this mentorship program. If you know any women who might want to volunteer, or any organizations that might be able to get the word out, email me: firstname.lastname@example.org.
4/24/2012 11:30:26 AM by Kathleen
Everybody keep cool today & drink lots of water!
By the way, the previous post was by Jason, who forgot to put his name.
Exciting things coming up!
4/24/2012 10:22:19 AM by Jason Rathsack
It's coming to the end of my semester - busy, busy, busy, and more things are being developed for the coming summer and next year. I can't wait for vacation, a summer job, and staying involved with the Gender Identity Center of Colorado!
We're still looking for volunteers for the summer, so hopefully we can get new recruitments!
It's that time of year again
4/22/2012 9:37:41 PM by Brianna
So ... it's that time of year again, when DU (grad) students are running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut-off! (It's midterms ... and those papers are sure looking A LOT bigger than they did during week 1)!
None-the-less, life is good. It's been beautiful out! So beautiful in fact, that I went swimming Saturday! I hope to see many of you down at the Gender Identity Center tomorrow :-)
4/20/2012 11:17:58 AM by Debbie
It's been fairly busy over here. We're watching movies and playing with Mickey. Yesterday we attended the day of Noise over at Auraria campus.
4/20/2012 9:32:27 AM by Briana
We have a lively bunch at the Gender Identity Center today. :) Lots of laughs out front. Come and join us on this beautiful day. We'd love to see your face!
4/12/2012 8:30:31 AM by Kathleen
I have class all day today, so I can learn how to be a better counselor. Wish me luck!
4/11/2012 7:55:52 AM by Briana
Debbie and I are holding down the fort here at the Gender Center on this early (it was earlier when we both arrived) Wednesday morning.
First, let me recommend Brett Dennen's album "Loverboy" for an upbeat, windows down, spring-y sort of soundtrack to accompany the good weather.
Second, let me recommend to you that you toast a whole wheat bagel at your workplace and bring neufchatel cheese (healthier cream cheese) to spread on it and indulge in the joyous aroma and taste of such a treat. I did.
Third, come see us. Sure, we don't open for another hour, so go ahead and make your coffee #1 (we'll take care of coffee #2) and take a shower (please) and map out your route to 1151 South Huron St. Today's the day. :)
Are you a Muppet or a man?

Sunny Day in Denver
4/9/2012 10:27:07 AM by Brianna
So today is a sunny day in Denver, whcih means you should come on down to the Gender Identity Center! We have some great music playing! I hope to see you all sometime today!
4/4/2012 11:03:29 AM by Debbie
We've got some great conversations going out in the front room. Drop on in, and see what they're about.
We live in a beautiful world (yeah we do yeah we do)
4/3/2012 10:02:34 AM by Brianna
Who wrote those lyrics?
So I am sitting here at The Center listening to the Once playlist on Pandora. Such a great movie. This playlist not only allows me to listen to the amazing movie's soundtrack, but also similar music like the Garden State soundtrack. Come on in for a relaxing time in the warmth of The Gender Identity Center, and out of the cold, wet and snowy day!
Cloudy Monday II
4/2/2012 2:03:23 PM by Brianna
Today definitely is a cloudy day in Denver, but we are bright and warm down at the Gender Identity Center. It's a busy day here and you should come on down, if you can!
In addition to being a cloudy day, it has been very busy down here, with lots of drop-ins, coffee brewing, pizza baking in the oven and good conversations had as well.
4/2/2012 10:49:15 AM by Briana
Back at work after a week off for spring break. Had a great time in the mountains for a few days. Now I'm facing a big batch of school work over the next few weeks.
We've had a great morning at the Gender Center. It's a bit chillier than it has been, but we have coffee brewing and jazz music playing. Come join Brianna, Sequoia, and me. We'd love to see your face!
3/29/2012 12:22:18 PM by Jason Rathsack
There are lots of people here today making lively conversation. Reflecting on Gold Rush I have to say that it was such a great experience and honestly indespensable. The people I met were truly amazing and inspiring. I hope we can all keep up the good work and reach out to the world with as much pride, knowledge, and expertise that I saw this last weekend.
What happens when you add too much creamer to coffee?
3/27/2012 7:33:40 PM by Brianna
You get super sweet coffee. What happens when you add that much creamer to burnt, end of the pot coffee? A burnt marshmallow flavor!
Today was a great, yet busy day down at the Center. I hope that next week is full of so much life! Hope to see you all then!
I got in a fight with the coffee maker...
3/27/2012 9:09:32 AM by Kathleen
...and I won! So come have a cup of coffee and a conversation with me.
Are we on our way to Oz?

I had a great time at Gold Rush this weekend and I hope you all did too! Now it's back to work and trying not to blow away in this ferocious wind!
Gold Rush Weekend
3/22/2012 12:18:07 PM by Jason Rathsack
The Gender Identity Center of Colorado is the new boom town. Gold Rush is here and I'm excited to help host the doctors, therapists, lawyers, authors, political figures, and everyone else that attends the conference. If I can sneek away from my hosting duties I'll be sittin' in a couple workshops to learn from the people that have devoted their lives to the trans community. Let's go mine for gold!
3/21/2012 3:42:16 PM by Debbie
We've all been busy gearing up for Gold Rush. Hope to see you all there!

Although today is a colder day, it is still beautiful day out. Come on down to the Gender Identity Center for a good time with us! We're listening to good music, having great conversations and enjoying the warmth streaming in through the windows.
The phone has been rigning off the hook today. Must be a few days away from GOLD RUSH!!!!
3/19/2012 12:37:04 PM by Briana
A beautiful, albeit slightly cooler day at the Gender Identity Center.
Started out the day by burning my mouth on my tea, then spilling said tea on my dress pants, and finally not being able to get my key to work in the GIC door. Great morning. ;)
The day has since improved. I had a great session with a client and fellow intern, Brianna #1, and I went on a grocery run in the beautiful sunshine. To celebrate St. Patty's day (a bit late) we bought Irish Creme flavored coffee creamer. Come be Irish with us!!
In other news, just a few days until GOLD RUSH! Sign up before it's too late. We're excited to spend time with members of the community we don't see on a daily basis.
Have a great week!

I'm sure everyone has seen the new Out Front issue posted around the net, but I thought in case someone hasn't I would pass along the info. There is a few great articles in this issue about a few Gender Fluid individuals that are prominent figures in Colorado. I suggest the reading because Gender Fluid is not particularly well understood, but I feel is an important aspect to gender identity and understanding gender expression as a whole. Here is the link:

Looking forward to the 70 degree afternoon. Just seeing one client today and then I'm off to school to finish a paper.
Come see us on this beautiful day!

Good Monday morning!
Looking forward to a 60 degree day!! I'm a warm weather kind of girl. These days make me happy.
In other news, I'm going to see one of my favorite bands tonight, NEEDTOBREATHE. :) Two of the band members graduated from Furman University where I did my undergrad. I'll be sporting Furman attire and singing at the top of my lungs.
I'll also try to add a picture of a few of us interns...
Productive day, woo hoo!
3/8/2012 4:40:50 PM by Jason Rathsack
Not that every day isn't productive, but today was productive for a few thangs. I think Sequoia's choice of Blues music helped with my focus. Imagine me plucking away at my laptop rocking back and forth like a soulful Blues guitarist.
3/8/2012 9:35:08 AM by Briana
Good morning! It's officially 2 weeks from the start of Gold Rush! See the Gold Rush tab for more information and to get registered. We can't wait to see all your faces.
Looking forward to a steady flow of people today. Coffee's brewing, heat's on, come visit!

Such a great day to open the windows and let some fresh air in! I'm working on my workshop for Gold Rush today. Stop in and let me know what you think I should include!

Cheese and Mexican Rice

So for all of you wondering .... Muenster cheese is really great in a quesadilla with Spanish/Mexican rice. Yummy lunch! Outside of eating, there is a constant energy down here at the Gender Identity Center. Come see for yourself!
2/27/2012 7:03:09 PM by
The usual busy morning at the Gender Center. Met with three clients, one new. Got to hang out with a few fellow interns and volunteers. Not a day goes by here without a good conversation. So grateful to be a part of this place!
2/23/2012 1:09:52 PM by
So on Tuesday, I headed out (with my class) to visit the Animal Assisted Therapy Programs of Colorado and I got to play with some goats. They were a ton of fun. Although, rest assured, we have no plans to bring goats to the GIC. Our dog Mickey will still be here on Fridays.

Didn't post my name. I'm Briana. :)
Starting the week off right...
2/20/2012 6:47:10 PM by
Incredibly busy day today! We had a steady flow of interns, clients, visitors, and volunteers filling up our chairs up front & flowing in and out of the office. Made a run to Goodwill with Brianna to drop off the TV and so cleared up some space in the front. Speaking of which, come check out our other TV which is available for movies/games!! Met with a new client tonight and was reminded that this is my dream job. So invigorating and such a privilege when I am let into another human's world. If today is any indication, we're going to have a good week. :) Hope to see you here!
My first post!!
2/8/2012 9:24:30 AM by
I'm one of the newest interns, Briana. See the page with all the staff members to learn a little more about me. I started out as a volunteer and have been an intern for about a month. I have felt so welcomed and included here. The sense of community is palpable.
I'm here this morning with Debbie and Liz and we're looking forward to a busy day with clients. Come brave the cold and see us!
Also, Andrew Bird is on the radio. Love him. You'll love him, too.
Is that Natasha Bedingfield?

It's Tuesday and--surprise, surprise--snowing agan! The roads are treacherous so everybody be careful!
2/1/2012 1:35:13 PM by
The lecture was really good. I have been told you can find it online (it was an alumnae talk by Lucy Miller). It was surprising though, because I had never realized anyone doubted Sensory Processing Disorder existed. A large part of the talk was the scientific proof she had found.
Finally I see you Crystal Clear
1/31/2012 4:40:42 PM by Brianna
10 points if you can guess what I am listening to at the moment ....
Things are going well at the Gender Identit Center. We've had a good flow of people today.
1/25/2012 1:45:51 PM by
I am headed over to a DU lecture on sensory processing disorder tommorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey there, so you all know, I wrote the previous post, but for some reason, my name didn't show up!
1/24/2012 1:33:31 PM by
Although it's grey, cold and snowing at random today, it is nice and warm at the Gender Identity Center. Come on down and enjoy some hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, gluten free chocolate chip cookes and almost gluten free cookies (minus the oats) chocolate chip oatmeal cookies while they last!! We all hope to see you soon!

Places of Worship

Sequoia is updating the website as I type! We've launched into a bit of a discussion about places of worship in Denver. What and how do you prefer to practice?

I went to a talk last night by Morris Dee (along with most of my classmates). He shared an interesting story about some fishermen after relating the whole history of the US to the importance of law. He was definately speaking to the lawyers in the audience (his jargon made me very glad I took a legal topics class) and while he seems to know about legal social justice, he does not seem to know much about social work at all. Of course, I have never heard any of his other talks, so I am not a real judge.
A catchy title
1/18/2012 7:40:01 AM by
I've been trying to come up with a catchy title for this, but nothing has come to mind! However, I want to express my excitement over the fact that the weather is supposed to be in the 50s (or mid teens Celsius) for the rest of the week!!! In addition to the weather, yesterday was a lovely day down at the Gender Identity Center. Busy! Hope to see some of you down there soon :)
Sunshine at last!
1/17/2012 10:31:30 AM by
It's about time we had a bright and sunny day! We've been on a The Fray kick for a few days, and still going strong! What would you listen to today?

I know you may be thinking, "what?!?" but we've been listening to really wonderful music in the background at the Gender Identity Center courtesy of a lovely volunteer. In case you're still curious, come on down and you will get to listen to The Fray, among other wonderful artists! Besides music, things are going well here. We have cookies to share with you! I hope to see you soon!

Trip to China
12/20/2011 2:03:12 PM by Debbie
The GIC is hopping today. One of our visitors suggested typing Denver to China into google directions. Give it a try- and come give us your suggestion of how to survive the trip, considering the long ocean voyage.

Today is a slow day at the Gender Identity Center. I assume that the holidays took it out of everyone! Stop in if you would like. I hope all is going well. :-D
It is all coming to and end
11/20/2011 5:34:49 PM by Brianna
I have come to realize that I have not written a blog for a while. Shame on me! Additionally, things are finally starting to come to and end. My first quarter at DU is coming to a close!!! I just have one more HUGE final due on the 22nd and then I am done, which means I will be around the Gender Identity Center more frequently! :) Yay!
I have been doing a lot of Final writing recently and have become reaquainted with my Women's and Gender Studies major. :-) I highly recommend the following articles and or books:
* Performative Acts and Gender Constitution - Judith Butler
* Bodies that Matter - Judith Butler
* Doing Gender - West and Zimmerman
* Doing Difference - West and Zimmerman
They are all a bit difficult to read, especially Butler, but very interesting. I love them all and think that many of you would enjoy them as well!
I must go back to my studies. Take care all, and enjoy.

No, not the food- the activities. Last week I was reading Getting It Done: Notes on Student Fritters by Stan Bernstein. It's a good article for you to read if you find yourself stuck in an open ended role, like being a student or looking for a job. Fritters are activities that "justify not working under the ever-present pressure to work". They are coping strategies that let you have a break from work without feeling guilty about it. And sometimes, that break lets you be more productive in the end by saving your sanity. No-one can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and live to tell the tale.
Happy 11/11/11 Everyone
11/11/2011 8:38:16 AM by Debbie
It is a very nice day outside, and today I will be working a little more on the grant in between seeing clients. I hope you all have a great day. Enjoy 11/11/11: it only comes once in a lifetime (unless you manage to live over a hundred years). Next year, 12/12/12 will be the last one till we hit 2101.
11/10/2011 3:10:27 PM by Debbie
Today we have been working on learning new tips and tricks for our computers and doing some folder organizing. Soon, we should be able to print receipts like you get in a store, instead of our 7 by 11 copies made by the printer.
Accounts and Things ...
11/8/2011 3:51:11 PM by Brianna
Today has been a good day. We made a run to Arc to donate a lot of clothes, which was successful and easy! I am currently working on accounts which is much easier than it was last time! It has been quieter today but there has been a good flow of people here, always wonderful.
11/8/2011 1:07:27 PM by Debbie
It is again pretty quiet down here at the GIC. I am working on writing a grant for the GIC.
El Dia de Los Muertos
11/1/2011 9:27:42 AM by Brianna
Today is the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday which celebrates life through remembering those who have passed before us. People get dressed up and make a lot of special, traditional Mexican food to commemorate the dead.
Today is also a cold day in Colorado. Here comes more snow!
Quite, Cold Tuesday

Yesterday was a beautiful, hot, sunny day with the wonderful smell of fall in the air. The leaves on the ground were crisp and refreshing when walking over them. Today is definitely preparing for a cold day tomorrow. Snow is exciting, but will definitely be something to get used to!
The Gender Identity Center is a bit slow today, but we have been kept busy with phone calls. We are all working on individual projects, so it is nice to be able to just sit and breathe a bit!

It is unusually quiet here for a Tuesday, and so we are all just working on individual projects. Personally, I'm investigating the Colorado Common Grant Application.

I spent last Saturday night attending "The therapeutic role that animals play in the lives of children" over at the University of Denver. The event was sponsered by the Institute for the Human Animal Connection. One of the speakers, Dr. Aubrey Fine, was very entertaining. He knows a lot about animal assisted therapy (one of the major inventors of the field), and it was wonderful to get to hear him speak.

Today has been a long, but good day so far. We have been preparing for the Memorial Service tonight at 7:30 at the Jefferson Memorial Church in Golden. I hope to see you there. Take care.

I feel very lucky to be a fast reader. Today was unusually slow and I had the opportunity to cruise through Jamison Green's book, "Becoming A Visible Man." It was accessible and informative- a nice balance of anecdotal and academic/ sociopolitical content.
