Gender and Culture: Exploring different understandings of gender
Morgan Seamont, MA
This workshop will explore how gender has been interpreted in different cultures, both modern and in the past, from an anthropological perspective. We will learn about well known identities such as the hirjas of India, but also explore lesser known ones, such as sworn virgins of Albania. Understanding how other cultures have included more than two genders is an important aspect of understanding how to move beyond a binary system and will give you better perspective on our own cultural understandings of gender.
Morgan Seamont received his MA from the University of Colorado in 2010 and is currently pursuing his PhD there. His research focuses on community formation in transgender males, how a sense of community is maintained and built in relationship to the larger LGB community, and how trans men navigate their sexual orientation after transitioning and whether that orientation plays into community building.
