Colorado Legal Issues: Anti-Discrimination Laws
Mindy Barton
In recent years, Colorado has passed several amendments to the state anti-discrimination laws which explicitly cover the transgender community. This workshop will cover laws in the areas of employment, housing & public accommodations and talk about national policy trends and federal legislation covering gender identity and expression.
Mindy Barton serves as the Legal Director of The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado (“The Center”). In that role she manages a Legal Helpline responding to over 350 contacts each year for legal assistance from individuals among Colorado’s LGBT community and those living with HIV. The Center provides direct legal services in a limited number of cases of discrimination and unfair legal treatment based on sexual orientation, gender identity and HIV status and also provides referrals to LGBT friendly attorneys and agencies. Much of Mindy’s work also surrounds legislative advocacy and policy outreach and education on issues of equality.
